Denmark

Monday 7 - Wednesday 9 February

We had a very relaxed packup from Walpole and headed off towards Denmark around 10am, our first stop was a lookout at Conspicuous Cliffs, a short detour off the highway. A very beautiful spot and the weather was clearing slightly! We walked down to the beach and listened to some surfers speak about old mate getting attacked by a shark at that beach...apparently a wobbegong bit him, but that's only the second time Lawrie had heard of someone getting bitten by one, although he'd witnessed a few close calls (mainly with people grabbing their tails, one guy got bitten on the balls in Moreton Bay...).

The surf break, the water was crystal clear.

A freshwater creek meanders past the boardwalk.

Big gutter at the start of the beach.

Along the drive was the Toffee Factory, we'd picked up some of their yummy chilli peanut brittle at the Valley of the Giants and were keen to try some other flavours. What a great decision, they had many different flavours, sold ice cream and also some great cider, which we partook with valour! We ended up taking home a mixed 6 pack of their plain apple and their apple and ginger. Our experience was finished with a banana smoothie ice-cream, where frozen banana was mixed with vanilla ice cream for a great smooth taste.

We were heading to the chocolate factory next but were informed you had to pay for a tiny taste of their choc and couldn't get a sample of their fancy creations before buying...so we gave it a miss and headed to the Bartholomews Meadery  which had a cool glass hive, great tasting honey (Karri) and some mead to try. We grabbed a bottle of their mead wine, which was much lighter and more summery than the bottle we got in the Barossa.

By this point we were getting hungry so we went up the hill to Denmark Brew & Ales, which had promoted itself on great food (including vegetarian!). The views were beautiful and the food absolutely stunning!

We checked out Ocean Beach before heading to our accommodation at The Cove. Illya was a great host, welcoming us into the places he built (all of local timbers) and offering us a drop off the next day so we could do a great walk along a section of the Bibbulumn track. We stayed in "Karri" and it was a great little timber chalet, tucked into the trees on a steep hill, with a bedroom upstairs. We spent the evening playing boardgames (supplied) and scrabble...which Kitty loves almost as much as boggle on the iPod.

Spot the difference! The rear of the card was from a real UNO deck?!?

We awoke on Tuesday to consistent rain and decided that a walk wasn't the best idea, so we had a lazy morning and then headed off to the Cheese Factory for a platter lunch. We ended up getting two smaller platters as the large one was a little meat heavy for Kitty's liking. In the end it was a decent spread and we were satisfied! Kitty offered to drive so Lawrie got stuck into the wine tasting, taking home a very very very tasty Riesling. On the drive back we stopped through at Madfish winery, they had a very cute puppy which Kitty played with while Lawrie knocked back a few tasters. We didn't try their "premium" brand, Howard Park, meant for cellaring, but took a very nice wooded Chardonnay (2007 Gold Turtle) home to drink with the planned Pizza dinner.
